Science 2010 Meeting

The Encontro com a Ciência e a Tecnologia em Portugal 2010 was held from July 4 to 7, 2010, at the Lisbon Congress Center.

National Scientific Production increased 68% between 2004 and 2008, approaching The European average. Details in the report published by GPEARI.

Contratação de investigadores

The reinforcement of the National Scientific and Technological System includes researcher recruitment programmes at various levels: Welcome II, Science 2007/8, Invited Chairs.

Fellowships and Grants

FCT funds an extensive list of different types of Fellowships accessible through Calls such as the Individual Fellowships 2010 and other types of advanced grants such as PROTEC.

A regulatory change affecting foreign citizens came into force recently.

R&D Institutions

FCT funds and evaluates R&D Institutions in diverse scientific areas including R&D Units of the Plurianual Funding Programme and, in particular, the Associate Laboratories.

R&D Projects

The latest yearly Call for Projects in all scientific domains closed on December 16, 2009, with applications exceeding 4400. FCT also opens Project Calls in specific scientific topics.

The National Program for Scientific Hardware Renewal was created to support the acquisition, update and expansion of scientific hardware and the buildup of National Networks of institutions sharing the usage of important, but relatively uncommon and expensive, hardware items.

Scientific Community Support Fund

FACC selectively supports scientific community initiatives aimed at the promotion of R&D or knowledge transmission in any scientific area lying outside the scope of current FCT programs.

Science Networks

FCT is a member or represents Portugal in several Scientific and Science Policy Networks dedicated to transnational cooperation.

EU Programmes

FCT provides information about EU sponsored scientific programmes such as the ERC and Marie Curie actions in the framework of the 7^th RFP.

The astronomer Nuno Cardoso Santos, researcher of the Centro de Astrofísica da Universidade do Porto, is one of the winners of the first edition of the international Viktor Ambartsumian prize. The prize, totalling 500 thousand dollars will be shared with Michel Mayor (Geneva Observatory) and Garik Israelian (Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias). The three researchers were honored for their work concerning stars with orbiting planets, which gives essential clues concerning planetary formation.
