Sobre a unidade

This Unit aims to do research in marine biology, ecology and biotechnology, in particular to exploit the protected marine environment of the Berlengas islands and Peniche area. This is a new Unit composed by highly enthusiastic young researchers. Nevertheless, the strategic plan behind the Unit is perceived to be at a very early stage and will require a lot of work before it is considered viable by this panel. At this stage, the panel would recommend that the Unit scientists choose one or more international research Centers as a role model and develop the idea of the mission for the Unit. The issue of local versus national versus international relevance should be thoroughly discussed. Then, the group should assemble a strong and independent External Advisory Board (ideally recruited from the role model Centers) to provide the scientific leadership and oversight necessary to establish the framework for their activities. Another possible development would be to join an established national FCT recognized Unit as a constituent Research Group to begin its activities with the possibility of later forming a new Unit whenever appropriate.
